A love of portraiture through drawing and painting has also found
expression in clay as can be seen in these examples done over the past 45 years. The most
recent pieces, Shakespeare and Gorilla, represent my love of
both primate species. Mother and Child was one of the first clay
sculptures I ever attempted, showing attention to an object in three dimensions.
Joy seems, at first, to bring another emotion to the viewer. Imagine the figure
with a tennis racket by his side after a championship win at Wimbledon and the title suddenly
makes sense. Are we not often brought to our knees with the overwhelming emotion that joy creates?
